On March 19, the Executive Board of the World Boxing international organization approved applications for membership from nine national federations, including Russia.

"The Executive Board of World Boxing has approved nine new applications for membership from the national boxing federations of Belarus, Cyprus, Mozambique, Niue, Papua New Guinea, Russia, Tanzania, Tonga and Zambia," the website says.

Earlier, the Secretary General of the Russian Boxing Federation, Alexander Besputin, confirmed that the organization aspires to membership in World Boxing to ensure the participation of athletes in the Olympic qualifying rounds.

Despite the approval of the applications, the issue of the format of participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes remains open. The World Boxing management intends to request recommendations from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) regarding the conditions of admission to the competition. The boxers are expected to compete as individual neutral athletes.

On February 14, 26-year-old Russian boxer Vartan Harutyunyan won the title of interim world champion according to the World Boxing Association (WBA), determined among athletes in the weight category up to 101.7 kg. The corresponding result was achieved after a 12-round match in Chelyabinsk. During the competition, Harutyunyan defeated 33-year-old compatriot Georgy Yunovidov by technical knockout in the sixth round.
