The development of nature-like technologies has opened up opportunities for interference in human life and the process of evolution. This was stated on March 19 by Mikhail Kovalchuk, President of the Kurchatov Institute National Research Center (NRC), at a visiting meeting of the government of the Leningrad Region in Gatchina.

"We are creating nature-like technologies, reproducing the technologies of nature. It's a green life, full of happiness, and everything else. But in doing so, we opened Pandora's box. Because we have the opportunity to interfere in human life and in the process of evolution. This is an absolute fact," Kovalchuk said.

According to him, this intervention can go in several directions: through nanobiotechnology, as well as through cognitive technologies. The Kurchatov Institute, for example, is developing an "artificial cell" — a biorobot that can be used in medicine by delivering drugs to blood vessels, but at the same time has the potential of selective weapons of mass destruction.

"And imagine, here you made this slurry, took it from the garage, formed this weapon, came and poured it into a well or into a water supply system, and that's it. You don't have to do anything. You don't need nuclear submarines. You don't need missiles, long-range planes. All. These are the new realities we live in," Kovalchuk said.

On February 25, Russian President Vladimir Putin called for the development of ethical foundations for the use of biotechnologies. The Head of State stressed that the development of biotechnologies should be accompanied by quality and safety for people. Regulation should support and encourage the creation of innovations, but at the same time guarantee the safety of products to society.
