The Russian car market dropped to sixth place in the European championship

The Russian car market, which took fifth place in the European championship in January, dropped a position lower in February. This was reported on March 19 by the analytical agency Autostat, citing data from the GlobalData consulting company.

Germany retains leadership in the European car market, where 211.3 thousand cars were sold in February (+3.8% by February 2025). Italy is in second place (157.3 thousand units; +14.1%), France closed the top three (120.8 thousand units; -14.7%).

In addition, Spain (97.1 thousand units; +7.5%) and the United Kingdom (90.1 thousand units; +7.2%) outstripped Russia in terms of new car sales. At the end of winter, 80,000 passenger cars were sold in Russia, which is 2.5% more than a year ago.

As Dmitry Yarygin, deputy head of the analytics department at Autostat, noted, low sales of new passenger cars in Russia are explained both by seasonal factors and by the adjustment of recycling, which forced some buyers to purchase cars before the new year.

Earlier, on March 17, it was reported that sales of domestic cars in the Russian market outstripped sales of Chinese cars for the first time in three years, starting in March 2023. Thus, by the end of February 2026, 31.6 thousand new passenger cars of domestic brands were sold in the Russian Federation. The February Chinese result was 31.1 thousand units.
