- Iran discussed a draft on the introduction of duties on passage through the Strait of Hormuz
The Iranian parliament is considering a draft levy of duties on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz. This was reported on March 19 by the IRIB TV channel with reference to a deputy of the Parliament of the Islamic Republic.
"We are promoting a project in parliament according to which, if the Strait of Hormuz is used as a safe route for navigation, energy transmission and food security, countries will be required to pay duties and taxes to the Islamic Republic of Iran," the IRIB deputy quotes in his Telegram channel.
On March 15, US President Donald Trump appealed to countries dependent on oil supplied through the Strait of Hormuz, blocked by Iran, to ensure the safety of this transport route. He then threatened NATO with a "bad future" if it refused to help unblock the water area.
Atif Kubursi, an economics professor at McMaster University, told Izvestia on March 18 that the conflict in the Middle East had become a serious blow to the global economy. According to the expert, this was influenced by the import tariffs imposed by Trump and the special operation of the United States and Israel on Iran, which disrupted oil supplies through the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz. For example, Asian economies depend on this oil. In his opinion, in order to create a balance of supply and demand with a shortage, the price of oil should rise up to $ 200 per barrel.
