- Reuters has learned that importers are looking for new LNG suppliers due to the conflict in Iran
The military clash between the United States and Israel with Iran is forcing major importers to reconsider the geography of supplies of liquefied natural gas (LNG). This was reported on March 19 by the Reuters news agency.
It is noted that the Japanese corporation Jera, against the background of regional destabilization, plans to start cooperation with suppliers outside the Middle East.
"Our risks in the Middle East are insignificant, but we are considering the possibility of additional spot purchases to solve the problem of cargo shortages," Ryosuke Tsugaru, Senior Managing Director of Jera, commented on the situation.
At the same time, he clarified that there had not yet been any emergency requests from domestic consumers. As an alternative, the company is considering increasing production and supplies from Canada and the United States. Tsugaru expressed serious concern about disruptions in the logistics of the region.
"Given that the global LNG market does not receive 90 million metric tons of products from the Middle East, the longer this continues, the greater the consequences will be," Tsugaru said.
The article notes that the crisis is aggravated by the blocking of the Strait of Hormuz by the Iranian military, which has effectively paralyzed tanker traffic and pushed up the price of Brent crude oil. In response, the IEA countries have already agreed to allocate 400 million barrels from emergency reserves to stabilize the energy market.
Earlier in the day, The Wall Street Journal reported that the escalation of attacks on the oil and gas infrastructure of the Persian Gulf countries is moving the conflict over Iran into a new, more dangerous phase, threatening global energy supplies. It was noted that the situation is aggravated by the actual closure of the Strait of Hormuz, through which about 20% of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas supplies pass under normal conditions.
