Experts gave tips on arranging a small bedroom without losing space.

When arranging a bedroom with an area of 8-12 sq. m. It is important to think over the layout in advance and choose pieces of furniture that will not "eat up" the space. On March 21, ORMATEK experts and interior designer Marina Donkovtseva, founder of LiDesign design studio, told Izvestia how to make such a room comfortable and visually spacious.

According to the designer, it is necessary to provide convenient passages on the sides of the bed in advance — at least 60-70 cm on each side, so that you can comfortably move around the room. Also, for small bedrooms, it is optimal to choose furniture that helps to use the space as efficiently as possible. For example, a bed with a lifting mechanism allows you to use the space under the mattress as an additional storage system.

"In such a base, you can store bed linen, blankets, pillows or seasonal items. This helps to partially unload the room and sometimes allows you to discard an extra wardrobe or chest of drawers. In addition, models with high legs are suitable for small bedrooms — due to the free space under them and the visible floor, the furniture seems lighter, and the space is perceived more freely," ORMATEK experts explained.

For storing things, Donkovtseva recommends installing a built-in closet up to the ceiling: this way you can use the entire height of the room and avoid visual fragmentation of space. In small bedrooms, it is better to install models with sliding doors — unlike swing doors, they do not interfere with the approach to the closet and provide convenient access to its contents. To save space inside, you can also make shallow shelves — about 40-45 cm — and place clothes rods across.

"One of the most common mistakes we encounter in practice is when a closet is placed close to the bed in a small bedroom and the actual size of the aisles is not taken into account. When only about 60-70 cm remains on the sides, the open sash blocks the passage, and it becomes inconvenient to use the cabinet. Another common situation is that when planning, they do not leave enough space for a curtain niche: at least 15-20 cm, taking into account the thickness of the radiators and the curtain tails. If there is a supply ventilation system, such as a breezer, the niche has to be moved forward, and because of this, the entire arrangement of furniture shifts," the designer noted.

To visually expand a small bedroom, the expert recommends sticking to a light color scheme in the interior, using mirrors, glass and glossy surfaces in it. Lighting plays an important role: instead of one chandelier, it is better to provide several light sources. For example, soft lighting by the bed or under the bedside tables creates the effect of "floating" furniture and adds depth to the interior.

An additional effect is provided by vertical and horizontal accents in the interior. High curtains from ceiling to floor visually "raise" the ceiling, and horizontal lines "expand" the walls.

"At the same time, it is necessary to take into account not only the layout and visual solutions, but also the functionality of the space. It is worth considering in advance how the room will be used in everyday life. For example, if there is a baby in the family, you may need a place for a cot next to the sleeping place. In general, the bed always remains the main element of the bedroom, so it is necessary that it is not only compact, but also comfortable for sleeping," ORMATEK experts concluded.
