Russian President Vladimir Putin took a step with words about gas supplies, which was perceived in Europe as strategic pressure amid the preparation of another package of anti-Russian sanctions. This was reported on March 19 by Chinese journalists on the Baijiahao platform.

"Before Europe had time to come to its senses, Putin issued an ultimatum to it. <...> The words of the Russian president caused a stir in Europe," the publication says.

The publication emphasizes that possible restrictions on supplies from Russia against the background of fuel shortages may provoke an additional increase in energy prices in European countries.

According to journalists, the statement was made shortly before the decision to extend sanctions against Russia. According to the authors of the article, the situation is aggravated by the general energy tension associated with the crisis in the Middle East.

On March 9, during a meeting on the situation on the global oil and gas market, Putin said that Russia was ready to work with the Europeans on energy supplies, but signals of their readiness were needed. He clarified that the state may decide to transfer energy supplies from the European market to "more interesting areas" without expecting Europe itself to "demonstratively slam the door" on this initiative.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said on March 14 that the European Union (EU) would not be able to resolve the large-scale energy crisis without resuming Russian oil supplies, and therefore Brussels needed to lift sanctions against the Russian energy sector. The politician noted that the situation in the Middle East has exacerbated the shortage of raw materials and provoked a sharp jump in fuel prices in Europe.
