Bears have come out of hibernation at the Moscow Zoo.
Himalayan bears Aladdin, Granny, Vasya and Fanya, as well as brown bear Grom came out of hibernation at the Moscow Zoo. Svetlana Akulova, General Director of the Moscow Zoo, announced this on Wednesday, March 18.
"Here, in the new territory, Aladdin, Thunder and our Grandmother have woken up. Fanya and Vasya woke up in the old territory. And in Ustyug, at the zoo, Misha woke up, but Yasha is still asleep," the Moscow City News agency quoted Akulova as saying.
According to the CEO, due to the extremely snowy winter, it was expected that the animals would wake up much later, writes "Moscow 24".
"We were most worried about Aladdin, because he is our age – he is 32 years old. We were very worried about his health. But everything turned out fine: everyone feels great, they slowly come to their senses, inspect the territory, check," Akulova added.
She added that the zoo staff is particularly proud of the first hibernation of the Himalayan bear Vasya, who, along with his friends, was rescued from smugglers in the fall of 2022. Akulova stressed that a few years ago these animals lived in cramped cages, never saw snow and did not sleep in winter, but thanks to the care of specialists they learned to live according to the laws of nature, reports RT.
Earlier, on February 2, two cubs of the large gerrosaurus, a large lizard native to the arid regions of sub—Saharan Africa and Madagascar, were born at the Moscow Zoo.
