- The Human Rights Council called the persecution of scientist Butyagin a shameful page of European justice
Russian human rights defenders and international organizations should respond to the prosecution of archaeologist Alexander Butyagin in Poland. This was announced on March 18 by Alexander Brod, a member of the Presidential Council for the Development of Civil Society and Human Rights (HRC).
"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, human rights defenders of Russia and other countries, and international organizations must speak out against this shameful trial and deliberate destruction of a professional scientist," he told RIA Novosti.
According to Brod, what is happening to the scientist is a "shameful page of European justice." He noted that Butyagin had been engaged in professional activities in Crimea for several years, acting within the framework of scientific standards and international law.
Butyagin's detention in Poland was reported on December 11, 2025. The Ukrainian authorities were looking for him allegedly for illegal archaeological research in Crimea. At the same time, a journalist from Izvestia said on January 12 that the Warsaw District Court had decided to extend his arrest after the hearing on Butyagin's case. Subsequently, a court in Poland refused to change the measure of restraint. According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, Kiev's accusations are absurd.
On March 18, the Warsaw District Court ruled on Butyagin's extradition to Ukraine. At that time, the scientist's lawyers stated that there was no evidence of his destruction of archaeological sites in the case file. However, the amount of damage has not been confirmed. Subsequently, lawyer Adam Domansky said that Butyagin's defense team plans to file a complaint against the Warsaw District Court's decision to extradite the scientist to Ukraine.
