Referral to a psychologist for Russians who do not want to have children will not be a mandatory measure. This was announced on March 18 by the head of the State Duma Committee on Health Protection, Sergei Leonov.

"This is a recommendation. This means that if a woman receives such a referral, she has the right to decide for herself whether or not to go to a psychologist. The important thing here is that the state provides such an opportunity," RIA Novosti quoted Leonov as saying.

The MP stressed that the consultation will be free, whereas such services are usually paid.

Earlier that day, the Ministry of Health published a document according to which women who stated during a reproductive medical examination that they had no plans to have children could be referred to a psychologist "in order to form positive attitudes towards having children."
