The orthodontist warned about the risks of long-term use of a pacifier
It is recommended to limit the use of pacifiers in children to the age of two years, since prolonged use can lead to malocclusion and the development of dental problems. Irina Kresteleva, an orthodontist at the Atribyut clinic, told Izvestia on March 20.
"After a year, the sucking reflex gradually fades away, and there is no need to use a pacifier, so the recommended age for using a pacifier is up to one or two years," the specialist said.
According to her, prolonged and intense pacifier sucking affects the formation of the facial skeleton and can lead to the development of anterior open or cross bite. In the first case, there is a noticeable gap between the upper and lower teeth, which makes it difficult for the lips to close and can cause problems with chewing, breathing and speech. In the second case, the lower teeth partially overlap the upper ones, which leads to injury to the mucous membrane, facial asymmetry and increased stress on the chewing muscles.
Kresteleva noted that if parents did not comply with the recommended time limits for using a pacifier, it is important to gradually give up this habit. Under the age of four, some bite changes can be corrected on their own.
"If the violations have already become entrenched, you will need the help of an orthodontist to select myogymnastics or corrective devices, as well as work with a speech therapist to restore the correct position of the tongue," Kresteleva explained.
