The likelihood of repeated attacks near Iran's Bushehr nuclear power plant remains high amid the escalating conflict in the Middle East. This was stated on March 18 by political analyst Dmitry Brije to Izvestia.

"This is no longer just an episode of war, it is a game of nuclear roulette in the Middle East," the expert stressed.

According to him, the very fact of a shell falling in the area of the nuclear infrastructure, even without consequences for the radiation background and the victims, is an alarming signal. The incident, according to the political scientist, indicates an increase in tension and blurring of the line between military and sensitive facilities. In such conditions, the risk of attacks on dual-use infrastructure increases, including near nuclear facilities, which can be used as a tool of psychological pressure.

Bridge noted that not only the possibility of direct damage to the reactor is particularly dangerous, but also the formation of a practice in which attacks near nuclear facilities begin to be perceived as acceptable. According to him, such actions contradict international norms, since objects containing dangerous forces are under special protection.

"From the point of view of international humanitarian law, the issue is extremely serious. Additional Protocol I to the Geneva Conventions separately protects facilities containing dangerous forces, including nuclear power plants, and explicitly states that they should not be targeted. In addition, customary international humanitarian law requires special care in relation to such facilities. Therefore, if the strike was targeted or carried out without proper discrimination and with awareness of the risk to nuclear safety, the grounds for talking about a violation of international humanitarian law are more than serious," the expert said.

The political scientist also pointed out that incidents of this kind increase the risks of further escalation, including not only military, but also information confrontation. In his opinion, the Persian Gulf countries will act pragmatically and harshly at the diplomatic level in such a situation, taking into account threats to regional stability and economic interests.

On March 17, the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran reported that an enemy shell had hit the territory of Bushehr. It was noted that the station was not damaged.

On the same day, Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), expressed serious concerns about the safety of the Bushehr nuclear power plant in Iran amid the escalating conflict in the Middle East. He noted that in the current situation, it is necessary to take into account the possible consequences of attacks.
