The material about the alleged US plans to oust Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel from his post, which was published in The New York Times (NYT) newspaper, is fake. This was announced on March 18 by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

"The reason why so many American media outlets continue to publish such fake stories is that they continue to rely on charlatans and liars," he wrote on his page on the social network X (ex. Twitter).

Referring to the author of the article in his publication, he stressed that some journalists are confident in their awareness, provided with information from alleged "sources."

The NYT article about the White House's plans to oust Diaz-Canel was published two days earlier. It was noted at the time that, according to American officials, a change of president could pave the way for economic transformation in Cuba and reform of certain sectors of the economy. At the same time, US President Donald Trump said he considered it an honor to take Cuba, which he threatened with an "unfriendly seizure" on March 9, under control.

The Atlantic magazine also reported on March 2 that Washington is considering the possibility of an operation against Cuba, based on the results of the attacks already carried out on Iran and Venezuela.
