Promes football player partially pleaded guilty to attacking his cousin with a knife
Quincy Promes, an ex-striker of the Spartak Moscow football club, partially pleaded guilty to a criminal case of attacking his cousin with a knife. This was announced on March 17 by the portal NU.nl with reference to the statement of the athlete's defense in the Amsterdam Court of Appeal.
According to the lawyers, Promes does not deserve to be punished anyway, because he defended himself. It is alleged that in July 2020, at a family holiday, he had an argument with a man whom Promes does not consider his cousin. This man allegedly stole jewelry from the athlete's aunt, and also tried to rip off a gold chain from his little nephew.
The football player's defense insists that the victim took the ex-Spartak striker outside, where they had a conflict. Besides, there were already "drunken relatives fighting."
"In this turmoil and in great emotional excitement, the client (Promes. - Ed.) once hit [the man] with a penknife," the lawyers of the accused concluded.
In the Netherlands, two criminal cases have been initiated against Promes. One of them was on the fact of stabbing a cousin, for which he was sentenced in absentia to 18 months in prison. The second case concerns participation in the importation of more than a ton of cocaine through the port of the Belgian city of Antwerp. For this, a court in Amsterdam sentenced the athlete in absentia to six years in prison.
On March 1 last year, the Netherlands began discussions with the UAE authorities on Promes' extradition. On June 12, the athlete was arrested in Dubai at his home. Then he was taken to a temporary detention center. In the same month, Promes was extradited from the UAE to the Netherlands.
