BMW M3 Touring car from April Fool's joke turned into reality
BMW has turned an April Fool's joke into a racing car that will launch the 24 Hours of Nurburgring marathon. Details about the model were shared by the press service of the Bavarian brand on the official website.
Last year, BMW prepared images of a non-existent station wagon racing car for April 1. According to representatives of the brand, the reaction of fans of the brand and automotive enthusiasts on social networks to this model "turned out to be stunning": the reach exceeded 1 million users. This prompted BMW to build such a car in reality. It took the engineers eight months to do this.
The novelty is called the M3 Touring 24H, which reflects the purpose of the car — racing on the iconic German Nurburgring highway. The technical base for the station wagon is based on the BMW M4 GT3 Evo model.
The car has a massive rear wing, safety frame, non-functional rear doors and 18-inch wheels. The power unit is a three—liter six-cylinder M TwinPower Turbo engine (598 hp; 700 Nm), combined with a six-speed X-Trac transmission.
In the 24-day marathon in Germany, which will take place on May 16-17, the car is declared in the SPX prototype class and will not compete directly with the three BMW M4 GT3 Evos, which will compete for victory in the highest SP9 category. It will be raced by the Schubert Motorsport team. Before that, the car will conduct preparatory races in the NLS series.
Earlier, on March 13, it was reported that Lada Automobile GmbH, which represented the Lada brand in the German market, declared bankruptcy after 25 years of operation. One of the reasons for the bankruptcy was the sharp drop in sales in recent years. The Lada brand withdrew from the European market in 2019, due to stricter environmental regulations.
