Moscow doctors removed a tooth grown in the nose of a 15-year-old teenager
Doctors in the capital performed an operation to remove a tooth that had grown in the nose of a 15-year-old boy who complained to them about facial asymmetry. This was announced on March 17 by the press service of the Moscow Department of Health.
Otorhinolaryngologist Vugar Dostiev said that the child's education was detected in one of the private clinics, after which the parents of the minor who had difficulty breathing decided to contact the Filatov Children's Hospital.
"The boy needed to have a Caldwell-Luke surgery, that is, to provide access through the upper gum in order to restore his ability to breathe normally. After making an incision, the doctors discovered a neoplasm inside which the tooth was located," the staff clarified.
The extracted material was sent for research and it was found out that this is a benign teratoma — an embryonic cell neoplasm, which, according to Dostiev, are rarely located in the facial area. The teratoma may contain elements unusual for the organ it occupies, such as hair, nails, muscle fibers, bones, or teeth.
"Our caution was fully justified, it was important to remove the neoplasm with a single complex, which we did. Such a rare and successful operation was made possible by the work of a multidisciplinary team," Dostiev concluded.
The South China Morning Post (SCMP) newspaper reported on December 27 last year that for the first time in the world, Chinese surgeons performed an operation in which a patient's ear, torn off as a result of an industrial accident, was temporarily transplanted onto her foot before being restored to her head. Specialists also repaired the scalp of the injured woman, using a covering from her stomach. After hours of surgery, she will undergo several more minor procedures.
