Stairwells should be avoided during earthquakes. This was announced on March 17 by seismologist, President of the National Academy of Sciences of Kyrgyzstan Kanatbek Abdrakhmatov.

"What's wrong with stairwells: the fact is that few people, unfortunately, are trying to escape in their apartment, everyone is crashing on the landing. And people are dying and getting injured there precisely because of the panic when everyone is rushing down," Abdrakhmatov said in an interview with RIA Novosti.

He added that it was safer to stay in an apartment in a multi-storey building. In order to escape, according to the expert, it is necessary to stand as close as possible to the supporting column or in the opening of the supporting wall.
