The US war against Iran has nothing to do with NATO. This was announced on March 16 by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz at a press conference with Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten.

"It was clear at any given time: This war is not NATO's business. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has already stressed this. I would like to join this directly," Merz said.

According to him, the United States did not consult with the alliance and the European Union (EU) countries before conducting a military operation in Iran, therefore, NATO and the German government do not consider it necessary to participate in this conflict.

He also noted that Germany, at the request of American President Donald Trump, maintained a presence on the eastern and northern flanks of NATO, where exercises are being conducted.

On the same day, German Foreign Minister Johann Vadefuhl said that NATO should not participate in ensuring the security of the Strait of Hormuz. At the same time, he noted that Germany supports the imposition of sanctions against those "responsible" for the blockade of the strait.

In turn, The Guardian newspaper stated that Europe's participation in the war against Iran could lead to serious consequences and weaken the political subjectivity of the EU. It is noted that the current conflict in the Middle East has become a source of paralysis in Europe, in which European leaders actually recognize violations of international law against Iran, but avoid directly condemning these actions.
