Lavrov called for an end to deadly actions in the Middle East
All parties to the conflict in the Middle East must stop actions that lead to civilian casualties and the destruction of civilian infrastructure. This was announced by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov at a press conference on March 16.
"Everything must be done to ensure that all participants in this crisis situation stop actions that damage civilian infrastructure and lead to civilian casualties, both in the Arab countries of the [Persian] Gulf and in the Islamic Republic of Iran," he said.
Lavrov noted that at the moment Iran is forced to defend itself by responding to aggression with strikes on the military infrastructure of the countries that attacked it, located in the region. He also expressed regret that the escalation affects, among others, the States that are members of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Persian Gulf. According to him, the parties need to stop fighting and sit down at the negotiating table if confidence in such a format of dialogue still remains.
The Russian Foreign Minister also confirmed that Moscow is ready to take on a mediating role in resolving the Iranian crisis, if necessary. Russia, together with like-minded countries, intends to continue to advocate for an immediate cease-fire and the search for political solutions to the conflict.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova added on March 12 that Russia confirms Iran's right to self-defense and calls on the United States and Israel to stop the aggression. She also drew attention to the humanitarian situation. According to her, Moscow assesses it as "extremely difficult." There are already more than a thousand victims in Iran.
On March 11, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and his Bahraini counterpart Abdel Latyf al-Zayani called for the end of hostilities around Iran, and also stressed the need to launch the negotiation process. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on March 11 that the topic of Iran's demands to the United States to resume negotiations had not been raised during the talks.
