- Russians will choose the 100 most vulnerable Red Book species of animals and plants
This summer, the first nationwide vote will be held in Russia, in which citizens will be asked to choose the "Top 100" rare species of animals and plants for their subsequent protection. This was announced on Monday, March 16, according to the newspaper Vedomosti.
The event, as specified, will be held within the framework of the project of this publication and the Agency for Economic Transformation and Development (APRE). "Together for the wild." The initiative is supported by the Presidential Grants Fund.
"Today, there are more than 1,000 species of plants, animals and fungi in the Red Book of Russia. But Russians don't know them well, and the country doesn't have a single set of wildlife symbols, as well as a common understanding of the options and formats for helping wildlife," said Vladislav Onishchenko, project manager and General Director of the Asia—Pacific Region.
Work on the preparation of voting materials will begin in the spring of 2026. It will be attended by scientists who will be tasked with preparing a scientifically based list of endangered species. After that, the list will be digitized and, based on it, an information portal will be created, where information on each selected representative of flora and fauna will be provided. There will also be information about the participating organizations of the project and assistance options for those who want to join the rescue of endangered species.
It is emphasized that the goal of the initiators is the desire to unite the state, entrepreneurs, corporations and representatives of society for the conservation of endangered species. It is expected that the project "Together for Wildlife" will contribute to the formation of a culture of conscious and responsible attitude towards the national nature.
On February 26, Alexey Nechaev, head of the New People Party faction in the State Duma (DG), said that in 2026, 72,000 students took part in the Green Offset environmental literacy competition held jointly with the Compass Foundation. He called responsible attitude to nature and animals the basis of patriotism and love for the Motherland.
