Sobyanin summed up the results of testing an unmanned train in the subway
Russia's first unmanned metro train has traveled more than 1,000 km along the Bolshaya Koltsevaya Line, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said on the MACH channel. Testing was launched two months ago.
Tests of the train based on the domestic model "Moscow-2024" are carried out without passengers, the driver is in the cabin for control, Sobyanin noted. "During the tests, the specialist never interfered with the operation of the system — it proves its reliability and safety," stressed the mayor of the capital.
Sobyanin said that the unmanned train has to go through several more stages of testing. By the end of this year, the train will start running without passengers along the Bolshaya Koltsevaya Line along with other trains, maintaining standard intervals for the Moscow metro. It is planned to transport passengers from 2027, and by 2030 the first fully unmanned line should be operational.
Software for train management, infrastructure, scheduling and dispatching has been created and maintained by the Center for Research and Development of Unmanned Vehicles. The system independently controls the acceleration and deceleration of the train, opens and closes the doors at the stations. When foreign objects appear on the tracks, the train immediately receives the appropriate signal. In addition, the program monitors the observance of movement intervals.
Earlier, the Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation announced plans to launch 60 fully unmanned electric trains on the Moscow Central Ring. In August 2025, Russian Railways (RZD) launched Russia's first unmanned Lastochka train, which began transporting passengers to the MCC.
