A million from the lunch box: home cooking brings significant benefits
Russians began to spend less and save more. And to do this not at the expense of the quality of life, but with benefits for your wallet and health. One of the most effective ways was to switch to lunches in containers that can be carried from home to work. Izvestia found out how this can bring hundreds of thousands of rubles a year to the family budget and what can be saved with this approach.
Dinners are hard to afford
In early March 2026, Sberindex published data that accurately describes the mood in society: nominal growth in consumer spending slowed to 5.8% year-on-year. At the same time, funds on deposits of Russians increased by 14% — fellow citizens began to save more.
Over the past year, the momentum of consumer demand has noticeably weakened," Sberbank's press service told Izvestia. — The categories related to large purchases have "sunk" the most. But the trend towards saving remains."
Savings on eating out are especially noticeable. Analysts of the Check Index project (which studies receipts from every third cash register in Russia) note that people are less likely to go to expensive establishments. In cafes and canteens, the average check (769 rubles) increased by 9% over the year, while traffic increased by only 2%. Consumers are looking for cheaper places to eat, but even canteens are a significant burden on the budget. According to the founder of the Flagship system, Elvira Glukhova, an expert on lending and investments, the share of food expenses in the budget of Russians reached 39% by the beginning of 2026. "The savings trend is also confirmed by the data from the Bank of Russia. In the regional report, the regulator notes a slowdown in the growth of food sales, the growing popularity of promotions and discounters, as well as a shift in demand in public catering from restaurants and cafes towards fast food and ready—to—eat food from supermarkets, the expert explained. "This points to a strategy of careful behavior: spend less, save more."
Save with quality
Meanwhile, a trend related to cooking for the week is gaining momentum on social media. Bloggers show how to close the issue of nutrition for five working days in advance in one Sunday evening, gaining both time and money.
"Many people think that cooking for the future is boring and monotonous, but in 3-4 hours you save 30-40% of the budget that would be spent on business lunches," explains culinary blogger Aliya Krokhaleva (Telegram channel "Photo Shoot on a plate"). "And if you get creative, you can set up a cooking workshop at home and provide yourself with different dishes all week."
According to the Check Index, the average lunch in the dining room is 769 rubles. There are 22 working days in a month, so the average Russian spends 16,918 rubles a month on food at work. "In my experience, if you cook complex meals at home, you will spend about 5,000 rubles per month on groceries (the cost of one serving is 200-250 rubles)," said Regina Umerova, an expert in event management and catering. — Thus, the monthly savings will amount to 11,918 rubles. Deduct 500 rubles from this for a set of high-quality containers in which you can heat food, if you don't have them yet. The first meal from home will pay them off."
Experts recommend looking for a lunch box labeled PP 5 (polypropylene). It is a food-grade plastic that can be washed in the dishwasher, heated in the microwave and even frozen. The airtight lid protects food from bacteria from the office refrigerator and prevents odors.
"Containers are often marked with "temperature up to +70 ° C" or "up to +90 ° C" — this is with a margin," explains Alyona Yarysheva, Candidate of Chemical Sciences, senior researcher at the Department of High Molecular Weight Compounds of the Chemical Faculty of Moscow State University. — Because in the absence of loads, the softening temperature of PP5 polypropylene is about 140 °C. Such a container will last a long time and will not emit harmful substances."
Health as a bonus
Among other things, the food you have prepared at home gives you more control over what you eat. "You choose the products, the amount of oil, salt and sugar. This is important, especially if you work with weight and eating habits, says Alexandra Bereznikova, an endocrinologist, nutritionist, and specialist in correcting eating habits and behavior. — You can accurately calculate BZHU (calories, proteins, fats, carbohydrates) for your tasks — whether you lose weight, gain weight, or just want to eat a balanced diet, the lunch box becomes a good tool for working with the diet."
The perception is also changing: a person with a container is not a "poor relative", but a rational investor who understands the value of money and takes care of himself.
Investment effect
It remains to understand where to invest the saved 11,918 rubles per month? Today, according to experts, the most reliable option is to open a top—up deposit with interest capitalization. According to the Central Bank, in February 2026, the maximum rate in the top 10 banks was in the range of 14-14.5%. However, the average market offers deposits for a year or more — 8-13% per annum.
Anna Zemlyanova, chief analyst at Sovcombank, calculated what would happen if 11,918 rubles were deposited into the account every month at 11% per annum:
- A year later, you will deposit 142,166 rubles (including 850 rubles for containers), and you will have 150,883 rubles in your account. The bank will give you almost 9 thousand — enough for an airfare.
- In two years, you will deposit 285,182 rubles, with a deposit of about 320,173 rubles (plus 35,000 on top).
- In three years, you will have set aside 428,198 rubles, and the account will already have 509,053 rubles. The net profit is 81 thousand, and these are tickets and a week of rest in a four—star Turkish hotel.
- After five years, the amount is about one million: with personal investments of 715,080 rubles, about 956,384 rubles appear in the account. The bank added almost 241.3 thousand.
- After seven years, real magic happens. You will physically set aside 1,001,112 rubles, but you will have approximately 1,511,764 rubles in your account. The bank will pay you an additional 510.7 thousand — that is, 34% of the total amount will be formed not by your efforts, but by time and compound interest.
"If you keep track of profitable offers, many banks give increased interest rates for the first 3-4 months — you can win even more on this," the expert noted.
According to the chief analyst, blue chips, good dividend stocks on the Russian stock market, can be considered as an alternative to the deposit. She explained how income will grow using the example of Sberbank shares.
Let's say we spend 11,918 rubles a month on buying shares, while in the first month the amount is 11,068 rubles, since 850 rubles are spent on containers. The estimated annual return on the portfolio is 19%, including stock appreciation and reinvested dividends. The bank's share price is expected to rise along with the increase in its capital.
The tax burden for a resident of the Russian Federation in 2025-2026 includes 13% on dividends (if their amount does not exceed 2.4 million rubles per year) and 13% on capital gains from the sale of shares.
Over 10 years, the total amount of investments will amount to 1.43 million rubles. With a yield of 19%, the value of the portfolio before taxes may rise to 3,888 million rubles. After taxes on dividends and taxes on the sale of shares are taken into account, the total amount is estimated at about 3,408 million rubles. Thus, the net profit will amount to about 2 million rubles, and the share of income generated by the market and the effect of time will reach approximately 58% of the total capital.
The trend of saving money today starts with a small thing — the ability to pack not only food, but also your budget competently. A Sunday evening in the kitchen, a set of high-quality containers and discipline turn 12 thousand rubles a month, first into half a million, and then into a million. And all this without prejudice to health and quality of life.
