Scammers have begun to implement a two-stage "SMS bombing" scheme, the purpose of which is to cause panic and prompt rash actions from the victim. This was reported on March 16 in the press center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation.

"SMS bombing or SMS bombing is a massive sending of a large number of messages to a specific person's subscriber number designed for human vulnerability. The attackers' goal is to cause panic, to force him to act quickly and thoughtlessly," the Russian Interior Ministry quoted TASS as saying.

The agency clarified that this is a way to distract the victim and prepare for a subsequent call. Fraudsters begin to send messages allegedly from banks or the Gosuslugi portal using special programs. These messages contain information about taking out a loan or hacking an account.

It is noted that after that, the scammers begin to call, posing as employees of banks or government agencies, and ask for the SMS code, bank card details (number, expiration date, CVC), full name and passport information, ostensibly to confirm identity. Next, the attackers gain control over the victim's phone or bank.

The press center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation reported on March 15 that Russian citizens began to better recognize the schemes used by remote scammers and respond more calmly to critical situations, which became possible thanks to a number of bans and new rules introduced in 2023. It was noted that the progress achieved in the fight against cybercrime is the result of the application of a set of legal and technological measures.
