- Nebenzia called the European reaction to the attack on Iran a "theater of the absurd."
The reaction of the European delegations to the United Nations (UN) to the military operation of the United States and Israel against Iran resembles a "theater of the absurd." This was announced on March 15 by Russia's Permanent Representative to the UN, Vasily Nebenzya.
"The comments of the European delegations resembled the performance of the "theater of the absurd." They <...> did not condemn an open act of aggression against a UN member state that violates the UN Charter and international law," Nebenzia said in an interview with the Serbian newspaper Politika.
The Russian diplomat also pointed out that, in his opinion, Western states in recent years have been promoting at the UN a model of the so-called "rules-based world order", formed in their own interests. He stressed that with this approach, the organization is used as a tool to achieve political goals.
At a meeting of the UN Security Council on March 11, a resolution prepared by Bahrain was adopted. The text strongly condemned the Islamic Republic of Iran and demanded that it stop attacks on Arab countries. The project was supported by 13 countries, while Moscow and Beijing abstained from voting. Nebenzia, who was at the discussions, justified the rejection of the Russian resolution by its "disadvantage to the true instigators of the bloody events in the region." He called the approved Bahraini project one-sided and biased.
