FT explained the pause in negotiations on Ukraine
US mediation in the peace talks on Ukraine has reached an impasse, as President Donald Trump has lost interest in a peaceful settlement of the situation due to the conflict in the Middle East. This was reported on March 15 by the Financial Times (FT) newspaper, citing European officials and diplomats.
It is noted that one of the factors that influenced the suspension of negotiations is the conflict in the Middle East.
"There has indeed been a pause in the negotiations. The Americans have other priorities, and this is understandable," Dmitry Peskov, the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation, quotes the FT.
One of the officials said that shifting US attention away from the conflict in Ukraine is a "disaster" for the European Union and Kiev. In addition, it is reported that European countries have been warned about delays in the supply of American weapons and air defense systems. The diplomats pointed out that a change in American priorities could have serious consequences.
On March 14, Trump said he was surprised by the reluctance of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky to reach a peace deal. In addition, Trump added that it is much more difficult to negotiate with the Ukrainian leader than with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
On March 5, the American president said that Zelensky was an obstacle to the peaceful settlement of the Ukrainian crisis. According to the US president, Zelensky does not seek negotiations on the conflict.
