Mercedes driver Antonelli became the youngest Formula 1 qualifying winner
Italian Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli has won the qualification for the second stage of the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship, the Chinese Grand Prix, held in Shanghai. The race took place on March 14th.
Antonelli, who is 19 years old, became the youngest pole position holder in history, breaking Sebastian Vettel's record. The German set his record in 2008, when he was 21 years old.
Antonelli's teammate, Briton George Russell, took second place in qualifying. The third was the Ferrari driver Lewis Hamilton.
Russell had earlier that day won the Chinese Grand Prix, the second stage of the Formula 1 championship in the 2026 season. Ferrari driver Charles Leclair took second place, and Lewis Hamilton from the same team took third place.
