Merz's party proposed limiting benefits to Ukrainians fit for military service
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz's Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party wants to limit the receipt of unemployment benefits by Ukrainian men who are recognized as fit for military service. This was reported on March 14 by the newspaper Die Welt.
"Young people from Ukraine who are capable of military service should not enter the German social security system," said Alexander Trom, speaker of the CDU parliamentary group on domestic policy.
German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) also expressed concern about the intensive immigration of Ukrainian men. According to him, the Ukrainian authorities should try to ensure that "young people can no longer emigrate to the European Union."
The article notes that at the end of 2025, the Bundestag passed a law according to which Ukrainians who entered Germany after April 2025 will in the future be considered as asylum seekers not from the war zone.
On February 26, Sky News reported that the British Interior Ministry denied asylum to a family of refugees from Ukraine and offered them to return to their homeland, resettling in "safe areas" in the west of Ukrainian territory or in Kiev.
On February 19, Polish President Karol Nawrocki signed a law abolishing the special status and benefits granted to Ukrainian refugees. According to this initiative, they will be deprived of free medical care and housing subsidies.
