Fraudsters have developed a new scheme for data theft, they send malicious files to victims under the guise of free applications for viewing the location of traffic cameras and traffic police radars. This was announced on March 14 by the Russian Interior Ministry.

As TASS clarified, scammers dump a file with the .apk extension into thematic groups in Telegram. After a person opens it, an application is automatically installed on the smartphone, with which fraudsters gain remote access to the device. Then they can log into the banking applications, apply for loans and debit the money.

Fraudsters can send such viruses under the guise of free services for viewing the location of traffic cameras, traffic police radars and other various "useful" applications. They also often write intriguing messages accompanied by an infected file, which the curious recipient, unaware of the danger, opens.

According to the Interior Ministry, such viruses can allow scammers to block notifications and SMS messages, which allows them to confirm various operations.

On March 11, the UBK of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia warned that fraudsters began sending emails with QR codes under the guise of the Federal Tax Service (FTS). Citizens receive notifications about unpaid taxes or arrears, which suggest that they quickly solve the problem by clicking on the QR code for payment. The Interior Ministry recommended checking information only through a personal account on the official website of the Federal Tax Service.
