- A special national holiday on March 15 is Fedot Vetronos: history, traditions, omens
Every year on March 15, Orthodox believers honor the memory of the Holy Martyr Theodotus, Bishop of Cyrene, who lived in the fourth century. In the national calendar, the holiday is known as Fedot Vetronos. In 2026, it falls on a Sunday. Read about its history, traditions, signs and strict prohibitions in the Izvestia article.
What is the church holiday on March 15th?
Saint Theodotus came from Galatia, Asia Minor. After converting to Christianity, he decided to devote himself to the service of God and eventually was elected bishop of the city of Kyrenia in Cyprus.
The saint's life fell during one of the most difficult periods of early Christianity, the time of persecution under Emperor Licinius. Despite the risk of being captured, Theodotus did not hide, openly called on the pagans to abandon idolatry and turn to Christ.
When the Cypriot governor Savin ordered to find the bishop in order to bring him to trial, Theodotus did not wait for the guards and came to the authorities himself. The saint deliberately went to suffering, not trying to preserve his position and life at the cost of renouncing the faith.
Theodotus was arrested and severely tortured, and then imprisoned. Five days later, he was brought in for questioning again. The judges hoped that after suffering the agony, the bishop would agree to renounce his faith. But the expectations turned out to be in vain — the saint continued to preach about Christ, without fear of new tortures.
Many pagans, looking at the bishop's sufferings, were shocked by his steadfastness and came to believe in Christ. When the viceroy realized that the torture was only making an increasing impression on others, he ordered the torture to stop and the saint to be imprisoned again.
Theodotus was released already under Emperor Constantine the Great, when the persecution of Christians ceased. He returned to Kyrenia, resumed his episcopal see, and led his flock for about two more years. He died peacefully around the year 326.
Traditions of the national holiday Fedot Vetronos on March 15th
In Russia, the church name of the saint was transformed into a more familiar form — Fedot. The day of his veneration received several names at once – Fedot Vetronos, Fedot Snow Drift, just Fedot. All of them were related to weather observations.
By the middle of March, sharp winds often rose, snowstorms came, roads were swept away, and nature seemed to remind us not to relax prematurely. "Fedot Vetronos is poking his nose everywhere," "Evdokia has equipped the spring, and Fedot will tear off the roof, then turn the woodpile," "Fedot is the wrong one," the peasants said.
In the morning, believers went to churches, lit candles and prayed to the Holy Martyr Theodotus for firmness in faith, spiritual fortitude, peace in the house, help in teaching and an end to strife. In the popular consciousness, the image of a martyred bishop was associated with the ability to withstand the onslaught of external forces, including those that a person cannot tame himself. Therefore, he was also approached with requests for protection from natural disasters.
In the villages, they tried to spend the day usefully, but without too much fuss. It was believed that the wind on Fedot was testing a person's strength. Whoever manages to keep order in the house, not succumb to irritation and prepare for spring in time, the new season will be successful.
The men were preparing for field work, checking and repairing equipment, adjusting handles, shovels, harrows. At that time, the women were tidying up the house, cooking, sorting and drying the seeds.
Teenagers were collecting birch bark on March 15. The ancestors considered birch to be a useful tree with protective power. Dishes, various household utensils, and protective amulets were made from its bark. Birch bark products served for a long time, kept heat and cold well, and saved food from dampness.
On Fedot Vetronos, a red geranium should have been brought into the house. According to beliefs, this flower helps to maintain well-being, and the year itself makes it more successful and "monetary".
What not to do on Fedot Vetronos holiday
On March 15, there were a number of prohibitions in Russia, the observance of which, according to the ancestors, helped to preserve health and well-being. So, in windy weather, one should not unnecessarily leave the house, since the spirit of the wind could deprive a person of luck and even life. If they had to leave their homes, the peasants took a birch amulet with them.
What else you can't do on March 15th:
- sewing and darning — there is a risk of "sewing up" prosperity and happiness;
- picking up other people's things or money from the ground — together with them, you can "pick up" someone else's poverty.;
- swearing and swearing — harsh words promise a prolonged black streak in life;
- buying new clothes — things will quickly deteriorate or will not be useful.;
- crying in front of a mirror will double the resentment and unhappiness after that.
