Oncologist warned about asymptomatic development of stomach cancer

Stomach cancer often develops slowly and may not cause significant symptoms for a long time. Mikhail Sudakov, an oncologist, a highly qualified surgeon at the I. M. Sechenov University Clinical Hospital, and an expert at the Oncologica Foundation, told about this on Friday, March 13.

According to the surgeon, many patients learn about the diagnosis already in the late stages, as the disease may not manifest itself at an early stage. The cause of cancer can be infection with Helicobacter pylori, smoking, alcohol abuse, hereditary predisposition, excessive salt intake and some precancerous mucosal changes.

"As the disease progresses, more pronounced signs may appear: dysphagia (difficulty passing food), vomiting of stomach contents with an unpleasant odor, and if the tumor disintegrates, then bleeding is possible — vomiting like coffee grounds," the expert said in a conversation with Lenta.Ru .

The oncologist added that the fourth stage of the disease is considered to be the most difficult, when the tumor spreads beyond the stomach and metastasizes to other organs, and the lungs become one of the possible areas of metastasis.

The doctor clarified that in Russia, about 30 thousand deaths from stomach cancer are registered annually, since due to late diagnosis, the five-year survival rate does not exceed 5-7%. A complete cure for advanced stomach cancer is rare, but with rapid, tailored individual therapy, long-term remission is possible, he concluded.
