Lavrov stressed the importance of maintaining the impartiality of the IAEA
In modern conditions, it is important for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to continue to maintain its impartiality and adhere to a depoliticized approach. This was announced on March 13 by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov during a meeting with the head of the agency, Rafael Grossi.
"It is important to remain committed to the basic principles of the IAEA: to maintain impartiality, take a depoliticized approach and focus solely on the implementation of those tasks that were the basis of the agreement on the establishment of the agency, including, of course, access to the benefits of peaceful nuclear energy for all Non-Proliferation Treaty member countries without exception," he said.
The Foreign Minister clarified that the agency, like any other multilateral structure dealing with nuclear nonproliferation, is currently being tested.
The Russian Foreign Minister recalled that it was Russia that was at the origin of the creation of the IAEA. According to Lavrov, she remains convinced that this organization deserves the broadest support.
Grossi and Alexey Likhachev, head of the Rosatom State Corporation, discussed the nuclear nonproliferation regime and the development of nuclear energy a day earlier. The next day, Likhachev, in the framework of interdepartmental consultations with the IAEA, pointed out the inadmissibility of attacks on nuclear power facilities. It was noted that the parties involved in the negotiations confirmed the importance of maintaining a constant dialogue on topical issues.
