The first money can be trusted by a child as early as six or seven years old, if he understands what they are needed for and is able to make a simple purchase on his own. Natalia Model, a teacher of the highest category, a methodologist and a specialist in preschool financial literacy, told Izvestia about this on March 13.

"Pocket money can be given starting from the senior preschool age, if children know how to manage money independently. For example, if they can already choose what to spend, they know how to buy from a list, calculate the total amount and change," the Model explained.

According to the expert, the meaning of pocket money, according to the teacher, is not thoughtless spending, but responsibility training — the ability to plan expenses, control desires and save for a specific goal. It is also important to teach your child safety rules: where to keep money and what to do if someone asks to borrow or give it away. As for the amount that should be given, the expert recommends solving this issue through a conversation with the child.

"It's worth discussing what the child needs money for, and carefully explaining that the family has a budget. It is useful to calculate regular expenses together with the student — travel, snacks, small expenses. And it depends on this to determine the amount," said the Model.

As a guideline, the expert proposed the formula: "50 rubles multiplied by age," but not as a strict rule, but as a starting point adapted to the family's capabilities. For example, if the child is seven years old, the amount will be 350 rubles, if eight years old — 400 rubles. The main thing is that the money should be given for an understandable period and with a clear agreement on what it will be spent on. As for spending control, it all depends on trust.

"Now many parents see purchases through children's bank cards linked to their account. But pocket money (except for mandatory expenses) remains a simulator, the child has the right to spend it in his own way," the Model said.

Finally, the question remains: is it worth paying for grades? The expert believes that parents should make the decision about this. But she recalled that psychologists and educators often call such motivation ineffective, since studying for a child is an analogue of work for adults.

Psychologist Yulia Losevskaya told in October how much money can be given to children for pocket expenses. According to her, the amount should be symbolic and increase with age — from 50 to 300 rubles. It is important for parents to understand exactly what the child plans to spend money on: for example, at school they most often spend on meals in the cafeteria.
