The circumstances of the incident
The signal about the tragedy was received on the morning of March 13. The bodies of seven people without visible injuries were found in an apartment building in the village of Zarechnaya. The source of Izvestia reported that the cause of death was carbon monoxide poisoning. It spread to four of the eight apartments in the building.
Later, this information was officially confirmed by the Prosecutor's office of the Penza region. Employees of the supervisory authority went to the scene to clarify all the circumstances of the incident. Forensic medical examinations have been appointed to determine the exact cause of death, the Investigative Committee (IC) clarified.
The reaction of law enforcement officers and authorities
The investigative bodies of the Investigative Committee of Russia in the Penza region have opened a criminal case under the article on causing death by negligence (Part 3 of Article 109 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). Investigators and criminologists of the regional department are establishing all the details of the incident.
According to preliminary data, the tragedy could be related to the operation of gas equipment. Therefore, specialists will study the technical condition of gas appliances and chimneys in residential premises, as well as their maintenance conditions.
Oleg Melnichenko, Governor of the Penza Region, noted that, according to the preliminary version, it was a faulty chimney that led to the deaths of people. He expressed his condolences to the families of the seven victims.
Melnichenko said that he had instructed the regional Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Labor, Social Protection and Demography to provide families with all necessary support. According to the governor's decision, 1 million rubles will be allocated to the relatives of each deceased.
