The only Irish Olympic champion in athletics, Delaney, has died.

Ireland's only Olympic running winner, Ron Delaney, has died at the age of 92. This was announced on March 12 by the International Association of Athletics Federations.

"The International Athletics Association is deeply saddened by the news that Irish 1956 Olympic champion in the 1,500 m Ron Delaney died on Wednesday (March 11) at the age of 91," the association said in a statement on its website.

Ron Delaney was born in Arklow, County Wicklow, on March 6, 1935 and moved to Dublin as a child. At the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne, he won the gold medal in running at the age of 21, setting an Olympic record.
