The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) has lifted 12 US and Canadian aircraft into the sky after the alleged appearance of two Russian Tu-142 anti-submarine aircraft in international airspace. This was reported on March 12 by the American magazine The National Interest (NI).

The incident occurred last week. It is clarified that after the appearance of the Russian aircraft, the command deployed two F-35A Lighting II, two F-22 Raptors, four KC-135 Stratotanker tankers, one E-3 Sentry long-range radar detection and control aircraft and two Canadian CF-18 Hornet fighters and a CC-150 Polaris tanker.

"The Russian planes remained in international airspace and did not invade the sovereign airspace of the United States or Canada. Such Russian activity in the air defense identification zones in Alaska and Canada occurs regularly and is not considered a threat," NORAD said in a statement.

Last year, on December 10, Vladimir Koretsky, head of the border department of the Federal Security Service (FSB) of Russia for St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region, announced that the military of the North Atlantic Alliance (NATO) had begun using "flying radars" - long—range radar detection and control aircraft — for reconnaissance activities near the Russian border in the Arctic. He added that competition in the region is growing and the collective West aims to establish an international management regime in the waters of the Northern Sea Route with withdrawal from Russian jurisdiction.
