Attempts by Moldovan President Maia Sandu to rewrite history, inventing an analogue of the Holodomor during the Moldavian SSR, cause only disgust. This was announced on March 12 by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova.

The reason for the comment was a video contest for high school students announced by the Moldovan Ministry of Education, which named "organized famine in the Moldavian SSR" among the key events of the 20th century. The diplomat accused Chisinau of rewriting history and "demonizing the republic's Soviet past."

"A request to Sandu for the Ukrainian Holodomor not to reveal his mouth. <...> What a meanness to raise your own children in absolute ignorance of the history of how people starved, what they starved from, where they starved. <...> It's just disgusting," Zakharova said, adding that all this is done "according to Ukrainian—Baltic patterns."

The representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry also drew attention to the attempts of the Moldovan authorities to convince the public that during the Soviet years parasites and antisocial elements were allegedly sent to the republic. She called what is happening in the country a fictional reality, where Russia is to blame for everything, and an attempt to escape from uncomfortable reality.

"You will not be able to turn Moldovan citizens into mankurts or just, as [Ukrainian President Vladimir] Zelensky says, individuals," she concluded.

On January 19, the Moldovan authorities announced the beginning of the procedure for denouncing key agreements underlying the country's membership in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). The head of the country's Foreign Ministry, Mihai Popsoi, explained that participation in the Commonwealth, according to the government, is incompatible with Moldova's status as a candidate for membership in the European Union.

In turn, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stressed on January 20 that the CIS remains an important and useful platform for cooperation, and Chisinau's withdrawal from the organization is only regrettable.
