Pediatrician, consultant on complementary foods of the Fomin Clinic network and author of the book "Mamina Valerian" Daria Ivanova assessed on Wednesday, March 11, the benefits and safety of cans for children.

The specialist noted in an interview with the Health Mail that to date, evidence-based medicine does not have convincing data on the effectiveness of cupping therapy. There are no recommendations for vacuum massage in any Western protocol for the treatment of acute respiratory viral infections, bronchitis or pneumonia. The Russian Society of Pediatricians and the World Health Organization (WHO) also advise against using cans for children.

At the same time, the main problem is not the lack of proven benefits, but this procedure itself carries very real health risks, she stressed.

The result of placing cans can be injuries and burns. Strong vacuum pressure can lead to skin damage, bruising, and even deep hemorrhages, which is especially dangerous for children, as they have delicate and thin skin.

Also, due to their use, an exacerbation of concomitant diseases may occur. In the presence of skin or vascular diseases, such as atopic dermatitis or blood clotting disorders, the use of cans can worsen the situation.

Violation of the integrity of the skin increases the risk of bacterial infection and the development of purulent complications, especially if the procedures are performed unhygienically. Young children do not know how to cool down effectively. Overheating, which often accompanies cupping procedures, is much more dangerous for a child with a high fever than the procedure itself. In addition, the procedure of setting cans scares children. Stress for a sick child is an additional factor that slows down recovery.

On the same day, Anna Usacheva, a pediatrician, allergist, immunologist, candidate of medical Sciences, warned that allergic diseases worsen first of all in the spring, RT reports.

On February 26, Elena Kharkov, pediatrician, infectious diseases specialist and vaccine prevention specialist at Alfskrin polyclinic, told how to prepare a child psychologically for medical procedures to reduce his anxiety. 360.ru .

Olga Popkova, a pediatric ophthalmologist at the SM Clinic for Children, said on February 19 that irritability, anxiety, and decreased academic performance may indicate vision problems. In addition, she said that the most common disorders that are diagnosed in children are refractive errors: myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), astigmatism. There are also violations of the joint work of the eyes and focusing — strabismus and amblyopia (lazy eye syndrome).
