Politico allowed von der Leyen's resignation due to disagreement with EP
The head of the European Commission (EC), Ursula von der Leyen, may lose her post due to disagreements with the European Parliament (EP), including in the context of the conflict in the Middle East. This was reported by the Politico newspaper on March 11.
"Ursula von der Leyen will face questioning from her own allies in parliament over accusations that she has abandoned the rules—based international order," the article says.
The publication added that the head of the EC will be severely criticized by his allies in the EP due to accusations of abandoning the international order. It is noted that deputies from the Socialist faction, who support the ruling coalition of the European Parliament, want to question von der Leyen about her position on the situation in the Middle East during the debate in Strasbourg.
Dissatisfaction in the European Parliament, as the newspaper reports, was caused by von der Leyen's statement about the need to change the old world order and change the institutions of the European Union (EU). In addition, the EP accused her of overstepping her authority because of her statement in support of regime change in Iran, which she made at a Conference of EU Ambassadors in Brussels.
Von der Leyen on Monday, March 9, called for reform of the EU institutions and its doctrine. According to her, if the EU considers it necessary to have a more realistic and interest-oriented foreign policy, then the bloc should be able to implement it.
On March 3, the Politico newspaper reported on the recognition by the European Union of impotence in the conflict in the Middle East. According to one of the unnamed EU diplomats, the bloc did not prepare for this conflict and now acts as a bystander. It was clarified that the EU does not have enough leverage in the region to take significant steps.
