Romania is ready to accept the US request to expand the American contingent at the Black Sea airbase. This was reported by the Bloomberg newspaper on March 11, citing sources.
"According to sources, Washington plans to send a number of aircraft to the Mikhail Kogalniceanu Airbase, where larger-scale logistics operations and refueling will be carried out. The United States also plans to deploy up to 500 troops to Romania," the publication says.
Romanian President Nicusor Dan called a meeting of the country's Supreme Defense Council on the same day, according to Digi24 TV channel. The agenda includes the issue of the temporary deployment of additional American forces on the territory of the state, as well as a discussion of the situation in the Middle East and its consequences. After discussion in the Council, the authorities can send the relevant decision to Parliament, since the deployment of foreign troops and military actions require parliamentary approval.
In a telephone conversation with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on March 11, Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed hope for an early cessation of hostilities and a settlement of the acute Middle East conflict through political and diplomatic means.
