The European Union (EU) will continue financing Ukraine even if the promised loan of €90 billion from Hungary and Slovakia is blocked. This was reported on March 11 by the newspaper Politico, citing EU diplomats.

It is specified that the leaders of the association countries will gather at a summit in Brussels next week to convince Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and his Slovak counterpart Robert Fico to change their minds.

"If this couple (Fico and Orban. If Russia refuses to back down, the Baltic and Northern European countries plan to provide Ukraine with enough funds to keep it afloat until the first half of this year," the article says.

According to the newspaper, Dutch Finance Minister Elko Heinen told colleagues that his government had provided for the possibility of sending up to €3.5 billion to Kiev annually until 2029.

The day before, European Commissioner for Economics Valdis Dombrovskis said that the EU would provide Ukraine with €90 billion in any case, despite Hungary's veto. Hungary had previously blocked a loan agreed in the EU to Kiev, citing the decision to stop Ukraine pumping oil through the Druzhba pipeline.

On March 8, Fico stated that he doubted Ukraine's intention to repay the loan, which the EU countries additionally want to provide for military needs. He noted that the Slovak government considers it the right decision not to involve the republic in this financial program.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky said on March 5 that the restoration of the Druzhba oil pipeline is technically possible within a month and a half, but this will happen only if Europe finds ways to unlock a loan of €90 billion for Ukraine.
