- The oceanographer explained the appearance of Doomsday fish off the coast of the United States.
Philip Sapozhnikov, an ecologist, Candidate of biological Sciences, and a leading researcher at the Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, said that herring kings that wash ashore in the United States are highly sensitive to electromagnetic fluctuations in the environment.
In conversation with aif.ru On March 8, the specialist noted that these fish have a very long and sensitive lateral line, thanks to which they perceive electromagnetic signals and navigate among the currents, avoiding currents that can bring them to the surface.
The scientist noted that a strong man-made electromagnetic effect in the water column can disorient fish, which is why some of them get into the updrafts and end up at the surface. Then waves and storms can take them ashore. At the same time, the specialist admitted that herring kings are able to sense seismic fluctuations, but research by Japanese scientists has not revealed a direct link between the appearance of these fish near the surface and the approach of earthquakes.
The ecologist also said that the herring king is a long rather than a large fish: its body can reach two to three meters. She swims in an inclined position, with her head up, and is sometimes found among flocks of herring, which is why she got her name. These fish live at a depth of about 500-700 m, feed on plankton and move quite slowly, which is why they often become prey to sharks and other predators.
American biologist Stefan Burns reported on March 6 that at the end of February, three herring kings washed ashore in Mexico, and another individual was found on March 4 in Vietnam.
Herring kings live at depths of over 900 m and rarely appear near the surface. They are popularly considered harbingers of catastrophes and are called "harbingers of Doomsday," writes Life.ru Japanese geologist Kiyoshi Wadatsumi hypothesized that these fish are able to sense the movements of tectonic plates, which may explain their appearance before natural disasters.
In November, a giant Doomsday Fish washed up on a Tasmanian beach. Ichthyology professor Kulum Brown identified the find as a giant tooth brace. He explained that these fish live at depths of up to 1.5 kilometers and can grow up to nine meters. They come to the surface when they are sick or dying, he clarifies. 360.ru . Scientific studies have not confirmed a link between belt-cutter emissions and natural disasters, the website reports. kp.ru .
Also last year, a rare pelagic largemouth shark washed ashore on the northern coast of Peru, this happened twice in a month. The increased frequency of rare species incidents has caused concern among marine experts.
