Over the past weekend and holidays, 516 road accidents were recorded on Russian roads, in which 87 people were killed and 686 injured. 73 of the dead were drivers or passengers. This was reported to Izvestia on March 10 by the State Traffic Inspectorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia.

In the Chuvash Republic, a 46-year-old female passenger car driver decided in the morning on 23 km of the Kugesi — Novocheboksarsk regional highway to skip an adjustable railway crossing at a traffic light forbidding her movement, but collided with a shunting locomotive. The woman died.

The State Traffic Inspectorate reminded of the importance of observing the rules of passage of railway crossings — this maneuver is considered dangerous and requires the driver to concentrate and pay maximum attention. Despite this, some drivers try to pass in front of a nearby train or locomotive. Trying to gain a few seconds of travel, they often endanger not only their own lives, but also the lives and health of their own passengers, train staff, passengers on commuter trains and long-distance trains.

In addition, in the Perm Region, on the 56 km of the Karagai—Kudymkar highway in the morning, a 56-year-old crossover driver, not convinced of the safety of the maneuver, drove into the oncoming lane while overtaking a truck, where he collided head-on with another passenger car driven by a 46-year-old motorist. At the same time, fragments from the colliding vehicles damaged a third passenger car moving in the direction of the culprit of the incident. Five people were killed in the accident: both drivers, two passengers of the crossover and one passenger of the oncoming car. Another passenger from the car of the culprit of the car accident was hospitalized with injuries. No one was injured in the third passenger car.

The State Traffic Inspectorate urged motorists to always be attentive, collected and disciplined when driving vehicles. Drivers were advised to abandon risky driving, not to be distracted while driving, not to exceed the permitted speed limit, to refrain from sudden changes of lanes, overtaking, entering the lane of oncoming traffic even in the permitted places and other dangerous maneuvers.

As a result of 133 accidents involving pedestrians, 14 people were killed, and another 126 were injured in various degrees of severity. Among the injured are 26 child pedestrians, 14 of whom were injured when crossing the roadway in unintended places. Of the total number of pedestrian incidents, 48 occurred at pedestrian crossings and 85 outside their area of operation.

In addition, over the weekend, 27 bus accidents were recorded on the roads of Russia, in which four people were killed, and 31 more road users, including one child, needed medical attention. The reason for 18 bus accidents were traffic violations committed by drivers of other vehicles.

So, in the Leningrad Region, in the evening, on 56 km of the federal highway A-121 "Sortavala", an 85-year-old passenger car driver suddenly became ill at the wheel, and he unexpectedly drove into the oncoming lane in a prohibited place for other road users, where he collided with an intercity bus carrying 19 passengers along the route. "Saint Petersburg — Priozersk". An elderly driver and passenger of a passenger car were killed in a car accident, and three bus passengers were hospitalized with injuries.

80 accidents involving minors were registered, 91 young road users were injured, including 59 passengers. There are no dead children.

"We urge motorists not to overestimate their strength and carefully monitor their health. Elderly drivers should be especially careful. Always get behind the wheel cheerful and well-rested. At the slightest sign of fatigue or malaise, temporarily cancel the trip until you get a full rest or recovery. Remember that the lives and health of other road users depend on your well—being," said Police Colonel Anton Belan, Deputy Head of the Department for Road Safety Promotion and Prevention of Child Traffic Injuries at the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation.

Moscow has become a leader in road safety in 2025. According to the Interior Ministry data provided on February 21, the death toll in road accidents on the capital's roads was 2.2 people per 100,000 population.
