German Chancellor Friedrich Merz's plans for the economic recovery and development of Germany are facing difficulties due to the loss of his Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party and the coalition ally the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) in the land elections in Baden-Wuerttemberg. This was reported on March 9 by the Bloomberg news agency.

The article notes that the election loss follows disagreements within the ruling coalition, and this may also lead to losses in four more land elections, which are scheduled to take place in 2026. According to the authors of the material, Merz's promise to revive the "stagnating German economy" is hindered by internal strife in the coalition on some key issues.

"If Merz's conservatives lose, it will undermine the chancellor's authority in his own political environment and increase tensions in the coalition with the SPD at the federal level," the article says.

It is specified that now the main focus of the coalition will not be on economic recovery, but on the upcoming land elections. At the same time, earlier media reported that German industrial production in January 2026 fell by 0.5%, while economists expected an increase of 1%.

Yesterday it was reported that the CDU lost to the Greens in the land elections in Baden-Wuerttemberg. According to exit polls, the Greens are gaining 32%, while the CDU gets 29%. The third place is occupied by the Alternative for Germany (AfD), which doubled its previous result and gained 17.5%.

The Bild newspaper, citing data from an INSA institute survey, reported on January 6 that Merz was in the penultimate place in the ranking of the 20 most popular German politicians. It was noted that on a scale from 0 to 10, the Chancellor was given an average score of 3.5 points.
