Wild garlic, which is popular among the peoples of the North Caucasus wild garlic is able to quickly and effectively inhibit the growth and development of bacteria. This was announced on March 9 by Candidate of Biological Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Biology of Ingush State University Lida Khashieva.

"Wild garlic is one of the first vitamin plants that awaken after winter. Its spring development begins earlier than that of all food plants. It is a natural source of biologically active substances with a wide spectrum of action," Khashiyeva told RIA Novosti.

The expert noted that the phytoncides contained in wild garlic are capable of suppressing the growth and development of bacteria, microscopic fungi and protozoa. At the same time, phytoncides of fresh wild garlic act on protozoa for ten minutes, and after heat treatment, their exposure time increases to half an hour.

In addition, according to her, wild garlic contains flavonoids, saponins, organic acids, vitamins B and C, as well as sulfur-containing substances with vasodilating and immunomodulatory effects, and the compound allicin with pronounced antioxidant properties.

"Wild garlic can be considered as a promising multi—faceted phytotherapeutic agent," concluded the biologist.
