- The FT pointed out the need for the United States to find ways out of the conflict with Iran
The US authorities are faced with the need to find a political solution to the conflict with Iran amid the growing military and economic costs of the war, Richard Haass, former president of the Council on Foreign Relations, wrote in an article for the Financial Times on March 8.
"The current war against Iran is a textbook example of a war of choice," he said.
According to Haas, unlike the "wars of necessity" that are being waged to protect key national interests, the conflict with Iran could have been prevented by diplomatic means. At the same time, the ongoing hostilities are yielding "fewer and fewer results and do not guarantee regime change in Tehran."
The analyst notes that prolonging the conflict increases risks for the United States, including the death of military personnel, rising energy prices and economic pressure. At the same time, this may weaken Washington's ability to face other challenges.
To end the war, the United States and Iran will eventually have to return to discussing the issues that caused the conflict, including the scale of Iran's nuclear program, missile restrictions, and conditions for easing sanctions.
At the same time, on March 6, US President Donald Trump wrote that an acceptable outcome of the conflict with Iran is the unconditional surrender of the republic. He noted that he was not considering any other settlement option. According to White House spokeswoman Caroline Leavitt, the American leader himself will determine when Tehran will cease to pose a threat to Washington.
