Statistics have shown that women take out mortgages much more often in the spring months than at other times of the year. Tatyana Reshetnikova, Deputy head of the mortgage department of the federal company Etagi, told Izvestia about this on March 8.

"Over the past 12 months, 53% of mortgage borrowers in Russia are men and 47% are women. And only in the spring months, representatives of the beautiful half of humanity take out mortgages more often than men. In the period from March to May last year, the proportion of women was at the level of 51%, a similar situation is observed in the first week of spring this year," she explained.

At the same time, according to the expert, December is the most unloved month for Russian women to apply for a mortgage. During this period, their share in the total volume of applications is the lowest and amounts to 44.7%. By the end of 2025, the share of female representatives among mortgage borrowers was 46%, a year earlier it was slightly higher — 47%.

Women aged 30-39 are the most active in taking out mortgages — 42%. Just over a quarter of loans are issued by women aged 40-49. They are followed by younger ones, aged 20-29, who account for 21% of mortgage loans. The rest are issued by women aged 50 and older.

"The largest proportion of women in their first marriage among mortgage borrowers over the past 12 months was in March last year — 60%, and the smallest in February this year — 37%. In general, such borrowers took out a mortgage in 44% of cases, 31% of borrowers had a second marriage, 17% were single, 6.8% were divorced, and the rest were in a civil marriage," the expert added.

In 2025, 51.9% of women who applied for a mortgage had only one child, mothers of two children were in second place — 34.6%, mothers with many children — 8.4%, and only 5.1% had no children at the time of mortgage registration. According to the results of the first months of this year, the first place is still among women with one child - 36.8%, the second among those raising two children — 31.6%, the third among those with many children — 5.2%, but the share of borrowers without children increased sharply to 26.4% at the beginning of the year.

"The increase in the share of borrowers without children is caused by the restriction of family mortgages and the increased availability of standard loans. In this category, due to the expensive mortgage market, a large pent-up demand has formed, and it will continue to be realized as rates decrease," Reshetnikova summed up.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has instructed the government to extend family mortgages to apartment buildings older than 20 years in cities with low housing construction in order to support large families.
