Ukrainian media reported a shortage of cash in the country's banks
Ukrainian banks are experiencing a cash shortage after the incident with the detention of cash collectors in Hungary, the Strana newspaper writes.ua" with reference to the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU).
"After the story of the cash collectors in Hungary, problems began in Ukrainian banks," the publication says.
It is noted that the state-owned Oschadbank on Monday scheduled the exchange of non-cash currency for cash "to replenish stocks at the cash desks."
On March 6, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine announced the seizure of seven Oschadbank cash collectors at the Hungarian customs. According to the head of the department, Andriy Sibiga, all seven were employees of the bank and were accompanied by two wagons that regularly transport funds between Ukraine and Austria.
Hungary's National Tax and Customs Service has confirmed the detention of seven Ukrainian citizens, including a former intelligence general, on suspicion of money laundering. The detained cars contained $40 million, €35 million and 9 kg of gold. A money laundering case has been initiated.
Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto, in turn, demanded that Ukraine explain the incident with the illegal transportation of money. According to the diplomat, since January 2026, $900 million, 420 million euros and 146 kg of gold have been transported through Hungary.
