Fraudulent schemes for obtaining loans in someone else's name are becoming possible due to leaks of personal data and insufficiently strict verification of the identity of borrowers. On March 6, Ilya Usynin, an arbitration administrator and expert on the protection of debtors' rights, told Izvestia.

According to him, the attackers use copies of documents and personal data to collect a complete "profile" of a person. It may include passport information, phone number, income information, and credit history. If the identity verification by the lender is limited only to the analysis of documents and photographs, scammers get the opportunity to impersonate another person and apply for loans in his name.

Usynin noted that when such a loan is discovered, it is important to act as quickly as possible. First of all, you need to request your credit history in order to assess the scale of the problem, and then submit an application to a bank or microfinance institution stating that the contract was concluded without the consent of the borrower. In parallel, you should contact the police and register the fact of fraud.

"After that, a copy of the application is sent to the lender, and the financial institution conducts an internal audit. If a bank or an MFI refuses to recognize the contract as invalid, the victim can file a complaint with the Bank of Russia and challenge the obligations in court," the specialist explained.

He also drew attention to the fact that in recent years the government has gradually strengthened the requirements for the identification of borrowers. In particular, for microfinance organizations, stricter procedures are being introduced to verify the identity and compare the customer's data with the bank account holder. Nevertheless, it is still impossible to completely eliminate the risk of obtaining loans for "credit twins".

To reduce the likelihood of such situations, citizens are advised to pay close attention to the protection of personal data. According to Usynin, copies of documents should not be distributed, codes from bank messages should not be passed on to third parties, and notifications of suspicious financial transactions should not be ignored. Regularly checking your credit history and monitoring your credit profile is becoming an important measure of financial security.

Evgeny Masharov, a member of the commission of the Public Chamber of the Russian Federation for the public examination of draft laws and other regulations, reported on March 5 that fraudsters began extorting personal data of apartment building residents by posing as Mosenergosbyt employees in house-wide chat rooms. According to him, such employees never collect information in this way and work in accordance with Russian law.
