The psychologist explained the reasons for the fear of receiving and giving gifts
Dorophobia — the fear of receiving gifts — can be caused by traumatic experiences, increased anxiety, or perfectionism. Konstantin Letts-Orletsov, head of the Ingosstrakh Virtual Clinic project, told Izvestia on March 6 about how it manifests itself and what ways exist to overcome it.
According to the expert, dorophobia is often based on self-doubt, fear of not meeting expectations, fear of commitment, or a feeling that the reaction to a gift will not be sincere enough.
"A person may feel that they don't deserve attention and gifts, or fear that their reaction won't be "sincere enough" and "joyful enough." Sometimes fear is associated with a fear of commitment — receiving a gift is perceived as a need to respond in kind, which creates additional pressure," he said.
As Letts-Orletsov emphasized, holidays increase dorophobia, as they are associated with mandatory gift exchanges, increased social pressure and inflated expectations. This creates additional stress and anxiety. So, a person can outwardly behave briskly, but feel cold and empty inside.
According to the expert, it is precisely negative childhood memories, such as laughing at a failed gift or manipulating through gifts, that can lead to dorophobia in adulthood. This makes it difficult to perceive gifts as an unconditional gesture of kindness, rather than as an appreciation or commitment.
According to the expert, to reduce stress, it is useful to discuss the format of gift exchange with loved ones in advance, choose a safe place to unpack and practice breathing techniques. If fear greatly interferes with life, it is recommended to consult a psychologist to work through injuries and develop coping strategies, the expert concluded.
Psychologist Yulia Belkina told on February 16 how not to harm your body with emotions. According to her, it is important to take time to rest and monitor your diet. The psychologist stressed that in the rhythm of big cities, recreation is often underestimated, although this is a wrong approach. She also noted the need for a full—fledged diet - without replacing food with sweets and snacks, including meat, fish and vegetables.
