The Evil Within

The Evil Within is rightfully considered the spiritual heir of Resident Evil (RE). It was directed by Shinji Mikami himself, the creator of the RE series. The games have the same author's handwriting, but The Evil Within is more akin to psychological horror. From the point of view of gameplay, the game can be called a "collection of the best" of the classic Resident Evil: there is stealth, action, survival in conditions of constant shortage of ammunition and first-aid kits, puzzles embedded in the environment.

Like RE, Fatal Frame hails from Japan and boasts a dark atmosphere with an "Asian" touch. Instead of zombies, there are ghosts, instead of firearms, there is a camera and a flashlight. The first part tells the story of a girl named Miku Hinasaki, who goes in search of her missing brother in an abandoned Himuro mansion. The house is associated with an ancient sacrificial ritual designed to keep the gates to the world of the dead closed. In the second game, twin sisters Mio and Mayu Amakawa try to solve the mystery of a cursed village under the rule of another similar dark ritual.

Outlast

Outlast and Resident Evil combine virtually invulnerable monsters. The main characters of the series are most often not heavily armed members of a special squad, but ordinary people who are unable to fight back against monsters in their path. This feeling of total hopelessness is familiar to everyone who ran away from Nemesis or Tyrant in RE. The most similar opponent in Outlast is Valrider.

Silent Hill 2 Remake

Historically, Resident Evil and Silent Hill have always been competing series, so it's impossible not to include the brainchild of Konami Studio in this list. The original Silent Hill 2 largely used a combat system similar to the early installments of Resident Evil, and the Bloober Team remake in 2024 gave the story a modern twist. Those who miss the old-school atmosphere of the Spencer Mansion and the streets of Raccoon City should pay attention to Crow Country. Mara's journey through an abandoned amusement park harks back to the pillars of the genre: PS1-era graphics, fixed camera angles, lots of puzzles, and an unsettling soundtrack.

This is a game in the spirit of Resident Evil with a pronounced sci-fi bias, a vivid genre hybrid. Instead of fixed camera angles, there is an overhead view, but the spirit of the classics is felt in many ways. The game borrows the characteristic features of RE games in inventory management, intense shootouts and the image of a hero whose fate you want to worry about. The plot tells the story of the android replicant Elster, who wakes up after a shipwreck on a distant planet and goes to an abandoned underground complex in search of her missing partner Ariana.

Dead Space remake

The original Dead Space was released at a time when fans were desperately waiting for a high-quality modern European survival horror. The Ishimura Space Station has become as iconic a location as the Raccoon City police station, and the plasma cutter is as much a favorite weapon of players as Leon's pistol. The remake carefully updated and improved the game, enhanced the atmosphere and retained all the advantages of the original.

A game that gameplay feels like the old parts of Resident Evil and is strongly inspired by the series. Everything here is consciously stylized to the classics — from the design of locations to the "tank" control with a fixed character rotation and puzzles. The story also fits, even the old mansion is available: the heroine Caroline Walker goes to the abandoned Wildwood estate in search of the missing twins, whose mysterious photos she received. As a result, the girl finds herself in the midst of nightmarish experiments on people and terrible occult rituals.
